Chumley's, February 17

Word started spread in the early afternoon that Brother might be planning a show for that night, for the stranded travelers. Spent the afternoon watching the snow continue to fall, checking the forecast, and hearing trickles of rumors that this show might really happen.

Early evening, the word came down, and as Hamish said in his road diary, the fans were standing by to paper the place with flyers to advertise the show. Once in the bar, through the windows, we could see Brother arriving in the lobby, and they soon started to set everything up. Amazingly, everything fit into the tiny space, and the guys began to play.

The guys started off the night with an extended jam into Crazy, as they played around with the sounds and drew the crowd in. Hamish was playing the blue didg, and Dez was jamming along in the background with his harmonica. Angus’ bass and T’s drums led the jam along, and it slowly evolved into Crazy. After a few guitar licks from Rick, the familiar melody was heard, bringing cheers and bubbles from the crowd.

BROTHERmusic.com Update

BROTHERmusic.com has been updated with a new song clip as you access the site. It's a clip from River, or Flow, or both, since they seem to be together now (which is not a bad thing). Nevertheless, it's Rick's spoken word part, and for those of you with the Hat Trick CD, this new clip is track 4: Let It Flow, about 2:40 in.

MidWinter, Show 3

The snow had arrived. When I awoke where I was staying that morning, the ground was already covered.

After another great show from Celtic Soul, the guys started setting up on stage. Five chairs were brought out to the front of the stage, and the instruments appeared, were tuned and set up. The 20 or so fans who had remained despite the snow warnings all grabbed chairs and sat right up front, and waited for them to begin.

The activity on the stage began die down, and Hamish came to the mic and began with “We don’t really know what were going to do, start with a little groove or something? Maybe some didg? Or something?” T responded with “Something? How does that go?” and after a bit of discussion, Hamish finished with “cool, we know what we’re gonna start with.”

Dez was playing electronic wind-like sounds in the background, as Rick was picking away notes on his guitar. Slowly but surely, the sounds all swirled and came together with Hamish playing the blue didg. Dez joined in with a bit of harmonica and it all slowly came down and faded out. After a bit of silence, Rick started the beginning to Fragile.

MidWinter, Show 2

Our second show of the day. We watched as the all the guys set up, and then Angus disappeared from the stage. Rick started out with a guitar riff, which went into AC/DC's Back in Black. The AC/DC song soon broke into the familiar rhythm of Unknown. While Angus played, Hamish riled the crowd up and directed the band towards the end part of the song, where Rick joined in to echo Angus on the pipe line.

Hamish told the crowd to "prepare to begin removing items of your clothing..." and encouraged the festival staff to turn off the lights in the rest of the hall, to bring the energy to in a bit, as Angus said, "let's get cozy". Rick started out the bare beginning to Bitch, with Angus vocalizing, and Dez providing wind like sounds, all in line with T's tapping drumsticks.

Soon...

Life has gotten busy, but I haven't forgotten. I'm hoping to review the night show from MidWinter tonight, and the rest later this week.

Can you all believe it was a month ago that we were all snowed in??

MidWinter, Show 1

After some pipers played traditional pipe tunes as the stage was being set, Brother came on stage, and started off their set with a powerful rendition of an daorah bheag. Hamish played along to begin, backed up with wavering guitars by Rick and bass sounds from Dez, and then Angus joined in. T played the rolling drums in the background, which really added to the tribal feeling to the beginning of this show. An daorah bheag slowly faded out with a guitar screech from Rick, and pounding drums from T and a scream from Angus which signaled the beginning of what was to be a great Brother show.

Sterling Hotel, February 14

Rick started off the evening, with a very well received solo set. He then began playing the blue didg, and recording and playing loops, to create a jam to bring the band out onto stage.

Hamish was the first on stage, and after some vocalizations, he picked up his didg and began playing. Dez soon followed, and T and Angus joined the stage. T began to pound out the familiar drumbeats of Unknown, and Angus picked up Hamish’s pipes. The crowd began to scream now, as the guys welcomed us to the show.

Hamish was saying something about the five of them being away for Valentine’s Day, and added “yes, we are now five, we turned around, and suddenly, there we were.”

Finally! Review is written and pics are up! Come read about the first PA show with the new 5 piece Brother.

ER Episode

According to my TV listings, TNT will be showing the episode of ER "True Lies" again on March 14. It's on here at 11AM. Set your VCR's, cause the last ten minutes of this episode feature a young group of musicians with bagpipes, if I remember correctly. Wonder who they could be...

3-24-03 - small update, Brother mentions this episode on their site - Uncle Davey!
